Shirov, The Sicilian with 3. Bb5 - fritztrainer opening (ChessBase)

!

ALEXEI SHIROV

·         Fritztrainer DVD

·         Videorunning time: 7 hours

·         Language: English

The Rossolimo Variation of the Sicilian Defence (1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5) is always an excellent choice with White if you want to avoid the deeply analysed main lines of the Open Sicilian (3.d4), in which the analysis frequently goes deep into the middlegame or sometimes even into the endgame. For that reason the move 3.Bb5 has a fi rm place in the repertoire of many grandmasters where it is welcome above all as an anti-Sveshnikov weapon. Instead of getting involved in a theoretical duel, White logically aims for strategically complex positions, e.g. by exchanging on c6 and at the cost of the bishop pair degrading Black’s pawn structure (doubled pawns c6/c5). This results in positions in which positional understanding is more important than knowledge of specifi c variations - meaning that only players who are aware of the general plans and typical piece manoeuvres will be able to find their way through them. (Text ChessBase)

Alexei Shirov provides you with the requisite understanding of the subtleties of these positions, by annotating extensively his most important games in this variation. During his career he has played the 3.Bb5 system with both colours and he shares with you on this DVD his valuable experience in the form of video lessons which take up a total running time of more than seven hours.

Alexej Shirov was born in Riga just like world champion Mihail Tal, and also his playing style reminds many chess fans of the young Tal. In the beginning of the 90ies, a comet-like rise brought the young Latvian to the world top within the shortest of time. Being no older than 22 years, he already had an Elo rating of nearly 2750 and belonged to the absolute elite. Since then Shirov has been one of the best players in the world, delighting all chess fans with original and amazing ideas on the board.

LUBOMIR FTACNIK: THE GRUENFELD DEFENCE

·         Fritztrainer DVD

·         Language: English

·         Video running time: 7 hrs 21 min

The Gruenfeld Defence (1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.Nc3 d5) enjoys a special star status in the family of Indian openings. It involves a daring, active concept: fighting for control of the centre with an early d7-d5 thrust supported only by pieces. The ensuing lines and positions promise more active play than most openings. Black has to know the critical ideas and most promising plans as most lines are pretty sharp and concrete. Many top players have tried to “refute” the Gruenfeld, honourably failed and ended up defending its charms with remarkable success. The opening is fully covered in 50 sections covering all lines of any importance. Two bonus sections discuss typical endgames - Black usually has equal or superior chances in Gruenfeld endings - as well as characteristic middlegame pawn structures. The DVD presents a repertoire - for each variation the author shows the best or most promising line for an amateur or tournament player. The games database gives the chance to understand more than 8000 Gruenfeld games played by the best players - 1300 of them deeply annotated. The majority of the notes are by Krasenkow and Ftacnik who have dilligently covered the opening in ChessBase Magazine for two decades.

Lubomir Ftacnik is a Slovak grandmaster with decades of experience in international chess. As a younger member of a strong chess generation in the former Czechoslovakia he helped to win silver at the Luzern Chess Olympiad in 1982. Most of his fellow grandmasters have been keen defenders of Gruenfeld Defence and the author has come up with his share of ideas in various lines. The work on the Gruenfeld DVD is the fruit of 30 years experience with this active and rewarding opening.(Text ChessBase)

LUBOMIR FTACNIK

·         Fritztrainer DVD

·         Sprache: Deutsch (incl. englischer Version)

·         Running time: 7 hours

Videolaufzeit: 7 Stunden. (Text ChessBase)

Martin, The ABC of the Vienna - fritztrainer opening (ChessBase)

!

ANDREW MARTIN

Video running time: 3 hours 42 minutes

·         Fritztrainer DVD

·         Language: English

Old fashioned? Certainly! Infrequent ? Definitely! Underestimated ? Without doubt! Dangerous? You must draw your own conclusions...... The Vienna Game deserves a place in the repertoire of all players. With 2. Nc3 White prevents the freeing thrust ...d7-d5 and keeps open the option of f2-f4, hoping to transpose to a superior King’s Gambit

For the Grandmaster, the Vienna can be used as a surprise weapon. At club level, everyone will be ready for 2. Nf3, but have they the same level of preparation against 2. Nc3? This is very doubtful. On this new Chessbase DVD International Master Andrew Martin argues that the Vienna is a good practical choice. White can steer the game into all manner of interesting positions according to Black’s response. He may play sharply or positionally. Black must respond very accurately to demonstrate equality.

IM Andrew Martin is 50 years old and is the manager of Coaching for the English Chess Federation. This is his 15th DVD for ChessBase.

Bologan, The Caro-Kann - fritztrainer opening (ChessBase)

!

Viktor Bologan

 Fritztrainer DVD

·         Language: English

·         Video running time: 4 hours 40 min.

The Caro-Kann is considered to be one of the safest and most reliable replies to 1.e4. So it comes as no surprise that in the list of top players who have made use of this defence there are no fewer than four world champions, namely Botvinnik, Petrosian, Karpov and Anand. In addition to that, the Caro-Kann is played by such top players as Adams, Dreev and Bareev.

The Moldavian top grandmaster Viktor Bologan presents in twenty videos a repertoire for Black which is easy to assimilate and yet playable at the highest of all levels. In his first six videos you will find recommendations for use against side lines (2.d3, 2.Nc3, 3.f3), the Exchange Variation, the Panov system and the e4-c4-system (holding back with d4). Then in seven videos there follows a detailed presentation of the Advance Variation (1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.e5 Bf5). The second main section (seven videos) is dedicated to the Classical System (1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3/d2 dxe4 4.Nxe4 Bf5), which can be countered with an easily comprehensible and standard setup. In his presentation of the various lines, Bologan lays the emphasis on the opening and early middlegame, and where the variations require it he also provides an evaluation of the endgames which arise from them. At the end of each video there is a short summing up of the system being recommended, in which Bologan goes back over those critical moments which the player of the Caro-Kann absolutely must bear in mind.

Viktor Bologan is a pupil of the top Moldavan trainer Vecheslav Chebanenko. For many years Bologan has been the number 1 in Moldava and has represented his country in eight chess Olympiads. His greatest successes were in 2003, when he first of all won the Aeroflot Open and then the famous Dortmund Tournament, ahead of Kramnik and Anand. The Moldovan has extensive experience as a trainer and has also published his first books.

Shirov, The Philidor Defence (ChessBase)

ALEXEI SHIROV

·         Fritztrainer DVD

·         Videorunning time: 5 hours 52 min

·         Language: English

The modern form of the Philidor Defence arises via the move order 1.e4 d6 2.d4 Nf6 3.Nc3 e5. Then after 4.Nf3 Nbd7, Shirov has introduced the pawn sacrifice 5.g4!? into practice - and achieved excellent results with it. Accepting the sacrifice leads to a very sharp position full of tactical possibilities. Shirov is one of the best connoisseurs of this system, and although he has been very successful with the white pieces in this line, he is always striving for objectivity and shows the possibilities for Black’s counterplay as well. Who finds the gambit 5.g4!? too double-edged, can find an alternative in the tried and tested, solid strategic approach 5.Bc4 Be7 6.0-0 0-0 7.Re1 c6 8.a4. Also on this system Shirov presents many of his own games, discussing among other things the difficult, but extremely important question whether and when White can advantageously proceed in the centre with d4-d5. The third system presented by Shirov arises after the traditional Philidor move order 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 d6 3.d4. Black tries to solve his problems by the radical 3... exd4 now, a move which was already played by Horwitz versus Staunton in 1846 and which recently has come into fashion again. Analysing his game against Nisipeanu, apart from Bacrot one of the experts of Black’s way of playing, Shirov shows how White can fight for the advantage here. (Text ChessBase)
