Bologan, The King's Indian - fritztrainer opening

!

 Viktor Bologan The King’s Indian

·         Fritztrainer DVD

·         Language: English

·         Video running time: 5 hours 10 min.

The King's Indian is one of the most interesting and aggressive defences Black can choose. The World Champions Robert James Fischer and Garry Kasparov used to play this opening often and with great success, and also today's word-class players are employing it frequently, like for instance Boris Gelfand, Alexei Shirov and Teimour Radjabov.

On this DVD, Viktor Bologan (Elo 2690) presents a complete King's Indian repertoire for Black. In 21 chapters the Grandmaster deals with all possible white reactions, showing the subtleties in main and side variations. The DVD is suitable for both the beginning and the advanced King's Indian adherent.

Bologan's explanations are based on his own experience and analyses.  Yet the top player knows only too well to who he owes his successes:  Grandmaster Zigurds Lanka, who once taught young Viktor the King's Indian and thus helped him to become a Grandmaster - since according to Bologan, the necessary norms were achieved... of course with the King's Indian!

Viktor Bologan is a pupil of the top Moldavan trainer Vecheslav Chebanenko. For many years Bologan has been the number 1 in Moldava and has represented his country in eight chess Olympiads. His greatest successes were in 2003, when he first of all won the Aeroflot Open and then the famous Dortmund Tournament, ahead of Kramnik and Anand. The Moldovan has extensive experience as a trainer and has also published his first books. (Text ChessBase)

Davies, The f4-Sicilian - fritztrainer opening (ChessBase)

!

Nigel Davies

·         Fritztrainer DVD

·         Language: English

·         Video running time: 4 hours

The f4 Sicilian is a perennial favorite with club players. It was popularised by Bent Larsen in the 1960s and then later on by British GMs such as Mark Hebden, James Plaskett and William Watson. White’s strategy is simple, the advance of his e- and f-pawns gains space on the kingside and might later be used as a battering ram behind which White’s pieces are ready to spring into the attack. Although this plan may sound primitive it can be highly effective. Indeed the Israeli GM Emil Sutovsky has used it to wreak havoc against some of the World’s top players.

On this DVD Davies makes a cogent argument for White playing 2.Nc3 rather than 2.f4 because of the gambit line with 2...d5! 3.exd5 Nf6. He goes on to show that this is not only a playable approach for White but can have devastating consequences against anything but the most accurate play by Black. Accordingly Davies’s presentation is offered for both players wishing to play this opening with White and for those who need to know how to meet it with Black. A special warning is offered to Najdorf players because 2.Nc3 d6 makes 3.f4 very dangerous. (Text ChessBase)

System requirements: Pentium-Processor at 300 Mhz or higher, 64 MB RAM, Windows XP, Windows Vista, DVD drive, mouse, soundcard

Nigel Davies has been an International Grandmaster since 1993 and is a former British Open Quickplay and U21 Champion. He has played the f4 Sicilian with both colours and was involved in developing the theory of the 2.f4 d5 gambit variation.

Which other opening could we be referring to apart from the Scandinavian or Centre-Counter Defence; 1 e4 d5 ! Playing fl at out for the win against 1 e4 is never easy, but here we encounter a variation where Black can do just that! All relevant second and third move alternatives for White are covered too! This DVD will be a boon to all chessplayers, but particularly to the busy person with limited time for study or those who wish to incorporate a new defence into their Black repertoire with the minimum possible hassle. Mikhalchishin, Arkhangelsk - fritztrainer opening (ChessBase)

Adrian Mikhalchishin

·         Fritztrainer DVD

·         Language: English

·         Running time: 5 hours

The Ruy Lopez represents one of the oldest and best openings for the first player, and everyone going for the Spanish game with Black faces the question of how he wants to tackle the white ideas. One of the more aggressive fighting methods is the move order 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 a6 4.Ba4 Nf6 5.0–0 b5 6.Bb3 Bb7, which was developed in the early sixties by players from the north Russian town of Archangelsk and has carried this name ever since. Later, the variation was intensively analysed by players from Lvov - among them Mikhalchishin and Beliavsky – and applied in tournament practice. In the second half of the seventies it gained great popularity for the first time. In the Archangelsk Variation, Black defines the position of this queen’s bishop early on with 6. ... Bb7 in order to exert pressure against the opponent’s centre, in particular the point e4. White must decide whether he protects this pawn solidly with 7.d3 or goes for the unfathomable complications after 7.c3 Nxe4. Another option is 7.Re1 Bc5 8.c3 d6 9.d4 Bb6, which is closely related to the Moller System. The experienced trainer and Grandmaster Adrian Mikhalchishin is an outstanding connoisseur of these variations, the ideas of which he goes on to explain in nearly five hours video playing time. Martin, The Budapest Gambit - fritztrainer opening (ChessBase)

!

ANDREW MARTIN

·         Fritztrainer DVD

·         Language: English

·         Running time: 4 hours 20 min.

Most chess players are naturally talented, but do not have the time to devote to chess theory, such is the pace of modern life. Yet it is human nature to want to do things well and to achieve good results. To make the right choice of opening system is therefore of crucial importance for these players if they want to make the most of what they have. Below master level and especially with Black, the most crucial thing is to strive for the initiative. It is absolutely no good trying to gradually equalize. Leave that to Karpov, Kramnik and the world championship matches, where we can admire the defensive technique from afar. Try this style at club level and one ends up exhausted and frustrated. Pressurizing the opponent means getting on to the attack and this is where the fiery Budapest Gambit comes into play. After 1 d4 Nf6 2 c4 e5 Black immediately takes the fight to White at the cost of a pawn. Active piece play is the predominant theme. Tactics abound. White can lose in a few moves if he or she does not know what they are doing. A life and death struggle is rarely what the White player wants at such an early stage of the game. At the very least the position will be laced with interest. Study of the Budapest Gambit will place an extremely dangerous weapon into the hands of the club player. (Text ChessBase)

Davies, The Queen's Gambit Declined Exchange Variation - fritztrainer opening (ChessBase)

!

Nigel Davies

  Fritztrainer DVD

·         Language: English

·         Video running time: 4 hours

The Queen’s Gambit Declined Exchange Variation is one of the most important opening systems, having been played by most of the great players in history and from both sides of the board. The most outstanding specialists in this method of play include Garry Kasparov, Mikhail Botvinnik and Samuel Reshevsky whilst the Black side has been championed by such notables as Anatoly Karpov, Boris Spassky and Paul Keres. It is truly an opening of champions. Characterised by an early resolution of central tension, the asymmetrical pawn structure leads to a variety of plans and ideas for both sides. One of the most traditional strategies for White is the minority attack which attempts to extend White’s influence along the half open c-file. There are also sharper plans available such as an advance of White’s central pawn majority or even castling long and going for a pawn storm on the kingside. On this DVD Nigel Davies explains these strategies in detail through a series of instructive games. Armed with this understanding the viewer will then be able to play this opening with either colour and always know what plans are available. Davies also shows how these plans can be used in openings with a similar pawn structure such as the Gruenfeld Defence and Caro-Kann, making this DVD valuable for those who would like to improve their knowledge of chess strategy in general.
